The next fixture for The Bridge is the FA Vase Round 2 away at fellow Essex Senior League members, Saffron Walden Town. Time for an in-depth FA Vase special me thinks….

The website aims to be informative and fun and every now and then I try to bring you something you might not know…hopefully, this is one of those times, read on dear reader…

The Football Association Challenge Vase, commonly known as the FA Vase, is a knockout cup competition in English football, organised by and named after The Football Association (the FA). It was staged for the first time in the 1974–75 season, effectively replacing the FA Amateur Cup, which was discontinued after the abolition of official amateur status by the FA. While the leading teams from the Amateur Cup switched to the existing FA Trophy, the lower-level teams entered the new FA Vase. As of 2013, the Vase is open to all clubs in levels five to seven of the National League System, equivalent to levels nine to eleven of the overall English football league system, although clubs from other leagues may apply to enter if their stadiums meet certain requirements.

The record for the most wins is held by Whitley Bay, with four victories. Whitley Bay have also won in three consecutive seasons. Billericay Town, Halesowen Town, and Tiverton Town have each won the Vase in two consecutive seasons. Current holders are Ascot United from the Isthmian League South Central Division, who beat previous season holders Newport Pagnell Town 1-0 to lift the trophy.

The first FA Vase final was won by Hoddesdon Town of the Spartan League who, despite being regarded as underdogs, beat Epsom & Ewell of the Surrey Senior League. In three of the four following seasons, Billericay Town won the competition to become the first team to win the Vase on three occasions, a feat matched in 2010 by Whitley Bay. During the 1980s, the tournament was won by teams that represented many different leagues from all parts of the country, from Whickham of the Wearside League in the northeast to Forest Green Rovers of the Hellenic League in the south. Halesowen Town became the second team to win the Vase in consecutive seasons, with victories in 1985 and 1986.

In the 1990s, Guiseley and Tiverton Town both appeared in the final more than once. Tiverton became the third club to win consecutive finals, emerging victorious in 1998 and 1999. Two years later Taunton Town won the Vase, giving clubs from the Western League three wins in four seasons. From 2009 to 2018, all ten finals involved a team from Northern League Division One, with eight of them taking the trophy. Brigg Town of the Northern Counties East League became the fourth club to win the Vase more than once in 2003, seven years after the club's first victory, and six years later Whitley Bay became the fifth club to achieve the feat. In 2019 AFC Fylde (formerly known as Kirkham & Wesham became the first team to have won both the FA Trophy and FA Vase.

Originally, if the final finished with the scores level after extra time, the teams would play again in a replay at a later date; more recently the final has always been decided on the day, with a penalty shootout as required. The winning club receives the FA Vase itself and prize money, in addition to prize money accumulated for winning earlier rounds.

Here’s the list of previous finals:

It’s a road trip for The Bridge again after the round one win at Potton United. Saffron Walden Town play at Catons Lane, Saffron Walden and hopefully quite a few of you will find your way there on Saturday to support the boys.

It’s a road trip but not too bad a road trip, 1 hour and 7 minutes with Google at the wheel for 39.8 miles to take you to Saffron and Walden, or just Saffron Walden really, for the second round vase match-up of the two ESL sides. Go on, you know you want to…

I’m not sure if we will be running a coach, so watch this space or one just like it and other HSFC social media outlets. As soon as I know, I’ll let you know.

Hullbridge and SWT have never met in the FA Vase…until now…
This round of the vase, round two (proper), has 128 teams competing in 64 matches and is 6 rounds away from Wembley, casera sera!

The road to Wembley. Ok, let’s not get too carried away, there’s 6 more games to win!
Nevertheless, Google will get you there in 1 hour 48 minutes and probably quicker as there was a lot of heavy traffic when I did the Google Maps bit. I won’t bother with directions just yet!

Saffron Walden Town Football Club is a football club based in Saffron Walden, Essex, England. They are currently members of the Essex Senior League and play at Catons Lane.

History
The club was established as Saffron Walden in 1872 and are the oldest senior football club in Essex. They entered the FA Cup in 1876–77, but withdrew after being drawn against holders Wanderers as they could not afford to travel. Two years later they made their first appearance, losing 5–0 to Upton Park in the first round.

In 1882 the club were founder members of the Essex County Football Association. In 1890 club secretary Arthur Smith, the headmaster of the local Boy's National School, negotiated an annual fee of £3 with Lord Braybrooke for the use of a piece of land in Loft's Lane; previously the club had played on the town common, but had been unable to charge spectators an entrance fee. The club reached the final of the Essex Junior Cup in 1894–94, but lost 3–0 to Barking Excelsior. In 1896–97 they reached the final again, beating Leytonstone 6–1 in a replay.

In 1899 they entered the Haverhill and District League, which they won in 1907–08, 1922–23, 1923–24, 1928–29, 1929–30 and 1933–34. The club also entered the Stansted and District League, the Cambridgeshire League and Hertfordshire and Essex Border League during the same era, winning the Stanstead & District League on seven occasions and the Border League once. In 1926 the club reached the final of the Essex Junior Cup, where a record crowd of 6,000 saw them lose 2–1 to Rainham Athletic.

The club moved to the Essex & Suffolk Border League and the North Essex League, before joining the Spartan League in 1933. In 1936–37 they won Division Two.
After World War II the club moved to the Parthenon League in 1954, and, after a single season, left to join the Hertfordshire County League.

In 1971 the club were founder members of the Essex Senior League. After winning the league in 1973–74, they switched to the Eastern Counties League, which they won in 1982–83. After finishing sixth the following season, the club joined Division Two North of the Isthmian League. In 1996 the club dropped back into the Essex Senior League, following a rule change which deemed the sloping pitch at Catons Lane to be unfit for the league. They won the league in 1999–2000 and were runners-up the following year, but ongoing work on the ground prevented the club from being promoted.

The club tried to transfer to the Eastern Counties League, but was prevented from doing so by the Essex Senior League. In order to fulfil their wish, in 2003–04 the club spent a season outside the league system, playing just friendlies, before rejoining Division One of the Eastern Counties League in 2004. In August 2011 they resigned from the league claiming that their financial situation meant that they could not guarantee that they would complete the 2011–12 season. In 2012 they rejoined the Eastern Counties League.
On 4 July 2012, members voted to convert the club into a Community Benefit Society. They were promoted to the Premier Division at the end of the 2014–15 season after finishing third in Division One.

At the end of the 2017–18 season Saffron Walden were transferred to the Essex Senior League. In 2019–20 the club were top of the table when the league was abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021–22 they were league runners-up, qualifying for a promotion play-off against Witham Town, which they lost 3–0.

After a few struggles in the league, can The Bridge come good in the Vase?
Can we make it to round 3 for the first time since 2018-19?
Will we be running a coach?
Will we be in the hat for round 4?
Will I run out of question marks?
Will I ever stop asking questions?
The Bloods v The Bridge, in the FA Vase, for a place in round 4…will you be there to cheer on the lads?
There remains just one thing left to say….
