I don’t know about you, but in recent weeks, I’ve been looking over my shoulder. What I saw was Sawbridgeworth, Stansted and an off in the distance FC Clacton. I know that The Bridge have been on the periphery of this relegation battle, but being a long-suffering Hammer, I know a bit about relegation battles and how you can get drawn into them.
At 86 minutes of this battle for vital points, The Bridge had a vital point that would have seen the day end with FC Clacton confirmed as relegated, Stansted gaining an impressive point at Barking to end the day on 25 from 34, leaving Sawbo on 28 from 35 and The Bridge on 33 from 35. All that would mean that our two rivals could both reach 37 points and overhaul The Bridge total, but they would have a difficult time doing it.
However, things changed when George Lusardi won the game for Sawbo in the 87th minute, and the table read: Hullbridge 32, Sawbridgeworth 30, and Stansted 25. This relegation battle is still alive and kicking!
The next stage of the battle is Tuesday night when Stansted are at home to Little Oakley (this was written Tuesday afternoon). A tough game for the hosts, but a win would take them to 28 points and a three-game shoot-out to decide the fate of the three teams. Whatever happens, it will go until Saturday at least.
What about the match report I hear you ask? Well, I'm not 'gonna lie. I wasn't at the game, and there was very little coverage on the media outlets for me to gather information from, so you know about as much as I do about the game. In other words, the goalscorers, the attendance, and the subs and yellow cards, so this is very much a high-level summary indeed.
Other than the bits of information on the two teams X feeds, I also know that two players were making their debuts for The Bridge. The two strikers were Tommy Pinkerton, who started in the number nine shirt, and second-half substitute Nikolay Zlatev, who replaced Darnell Williams on 67 minutes. If my internet research is correct, Tommy was previously with Leigh Ramblers, and Nikolay has spent time with Southend United and also previously with The Bridge.
That, as I mentioned, is about all I can tell you. I’ve not seen the goals anywhere, but for the record and as shown above, Morgan Arnold opened the scoring on 30 minutes before Piers Hatcliff equalised on 58’. George Lusardi got the winner, but I should think The Bridge were in the game as it took until the 87th minute before Sawbo won it. How the two teams played and whether Sawbo deserved the victory I can't tell, but take the victory they did, and that now creates all the drama to follow.
Apologies for the lack of detail; sometimes, it happens with games at this level, and once again, I'm left lamenting the absence of VEO…I'll be glad to see that back!
So, we move on to the next one and will sit glued to FWP this evening as we hope for a Little Oakley victory and a massive turnout for the lads on Saturday because it’s going down to the wire and…
