Match Report

Barkingside FC 1-1 Hullbridge Sports FC

On a cold night in Ilford, Sports played their rearranged fixture against Barkingside FC who have recently climbed their way out of the trouble spot near the foot of the Essex Senior League.

This was the first meeting of the two clubs since ex-Hullbridge coach Aaron Hunwicks left Sports to resume his playing for Mike Walthers at Barkingside FC.

It was strange to see Hullbridge captain Jimmy Cox shaking hands with Barkingside captain Aaron Hunwicks in the centre circle before the kick off, but both sides still needed the points, so it was obvious from the start that no ground would be given.

Sport didn’t take long to get an effort in on goal as Callum Ibe headed down to Jimmy Cox, but his lob on 6 minutes went over the bar.

It was almost a quarter of an hour later before Hullbridge had another chance when Matt Tapley’s free kick was headed wide by Rob Hodgson, but the chances were few and far between with Barkingside being the better side.

Aaron Hunwicks almost came back to haunt Sports when his direct free kick went over the wall and was heading for the top corner, but it clipped Matt Tapley on the way over the wall and just went in to the side netting.

Four minutes later and Hullbridge found themselves behind after some very poor defending. Barkingside were allowed so much time in the area and passed it around before Thompson slotted home giving Jamie Merralls in the Sports goal little chance.

Barkingside blocked a shot from Sotoyinbo after a good cross from Jimmy Cox on 34 minutes, but it was Jamie Merralls who kept Hullbridge in the game on 39 minutes after a deflected shot was heading goalwards, but Merralls pulled off an excellent save to tip the ball over the crossbar.

After Sports poor first half, they came out a bit more fired up in the second period and started to pressure Barkingside in to mistakes. As the home side started to look disjointed Hullbridge had a massive penalty shout. Michael Salako chased a ball down in the area, stopped and the Redbridge player ran in to the back of him knocking him to the floor. Incredibly the Referee not only didn’t give a penalty, but booked Salako for diving!

It then all got a bit heated and a very unhappy Darren Manning was sent from the dugout after protesting to the Referee.

On 64 minutes Callum Ibe had a shot that went just wide and then on 67 minutes Ibe’s battling in the box saw the ball fall to Adebola Sotoyinbo on the edge of the box, his shot floated over the Barkingside keeper to level the score up making it 1-1.

Sports now finally clicked in to action and on 73 minutes Jimmy Cox flicks the ball up to himself and volleys goalwards, but the Barkingside keeper pushes it away. Substitute Perry Hirst gets to the ball first, but he fires straight at the keeper and the score remains level.

On 85 minutes Perry Hirst crosses to Callum Ibe who turns and shoots, but the Barkingside defender blocks and then a minute later Jimmy Cox gets a shot off on the edge of the box, but it goes just over the bar.

Hullbridge pressed for the winner right up until the end and substitute Ollie Miller shot over on 89 minutes, Callum Ibe forces a save from the Barkingside keeper on 90+1 and finally when Perry Hirst does get the ball in the net on 90+5, he is judged to have been offside and it doesn’t count.

FT – Barkingside FC 1-1 Hullbridge Sports FC

A draw was probably a fair result on the night, although Barkingside will be happier with the point than Sports who still sit 19th and in the bottom four. Barkingside sit outside the relegation zone five points ahead of Hullbridge as it all seems quite tight at the bottom.

With the fourth worst goal difference, Hullbridge must stop shipping goals if they are going to turn the season around. Games are running out and it’s got to be 3 points a game!

Sorry about the photographs, but the lights at Cricklefield Stadium are very yellow!
